There are over 150 different types of headaches, so the next time you get one, don’t think that it’s a straightforward cause and effect. But what causes a headache in the first place? It could be anything from stress, a blunt force trauma injury, an issue with your nerves or perhaps a lack of hydration. During a headache, there is a mechanism that activities which targets specific nerves, blood vessels and muscles. These nerves will send reports to your brain and thus, you feel a sharp, dull or broad affliction inside your head.

Try a cold pack

A headache that is emanating from your neck or eye socket, can be deemed a cluster headache. You may feel like your head is heating up if you place your hand on your forehead or neck and you feel a localized warm patch. You can use a cold pack to draw some of that heat away and cool your head. It should be placed inside a towel or paper towel, so you don’t have a sudden imbalance of temperatures. The goal is to get your temperature down to normal levels, not below them. Just compress this cold pack on your head for approximately 10-20 minutes.

A hot compress

If you have a tension headache, placing a heat pad on your head could relieve it. This is a tried and trusted headache treatment and can be used for most cold sweat headaches, such as those caused by fatigue or dehydration. If you have a headache caused by the flu, a lukewarm heat pad, wrapped in cloth could bring you some much-needed relief. Also, you can take a warm shower to raise your temperature as well.

Eye socket

Some people experience a headache that seems to be emanating from right behind the eyeball. Speak with an ENT doctor and he or she will tell you, that dimming the lights will take away some of that feeling. There will be less stress and strain placed on the nerves of your eyeball having to adjust to the light and this can relieve some of the pressure. Draw the curtains if you can and rely on low-level lamp lights, preferably with a lampshade so the light isn’t directed into your eyes.

Lying flat

If you have a neck pressure that is causing your headache, an ENT doctor would recommend lying flat on the ground to relieve some of the aching. If you lean too far back you could pinch the nerve further, but if you lean your head forward this can pull the nerve. So, having a neutral flat posture would really help you.
