Plastic Surgery

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the top five surgical procedures performed for cosmesis were:

  • Breast augmentation
  • Nose reshaping
  • Liposuction
  • Eyelid surgery
  • Tummy tuck

Grand Rapids ENT surgeons are trained and experienced in both nose reshaping (rhinoplasty) and eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty).

Plastic Surgery for Teenagers or Children

Teenagers typically have very different motivations and goals than adults for plastic surgery. Teens tend to have surgeries to fit in with their peer group, where adults desire to stand out and look attractive. Grand Rapids ENT does not have a formal opinion about cosmetic surgery for teenagers.

Rhinoplasty (nose reshaping) can be performed on the nose to straighten the bridge or remove a hump. It can also be performed to reshape the tip or open the breathing passages. This should not be performed until age 16 to 17 - when the nose reaches its adult size. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more than 38,000 teens had rhinoplasty within the United States in 2008.

Otoplasty, surgical correction of protruding ears, can be performed at any time after the age of 5. Nearly 8,000 cases were performed in 2008 in this age group (making up over 10% of the cases performed, total). Otoplasty can be performed as an outpatient procedure at Grand Rapids ENT.

What to Consider When Meeting with a Surgeon

A cosmetic or reconstructive craniofacial surgeon should be certified in one or more of the following specialties:

After board certification, the surgeon may also be granted a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Important Steps for a Successful Experience

  • Do your homework. Know the procedure, the risks, the benefits. Don't expect the surgeon or others to do this for you.
  • Have realistic expectations.
  • Be informed. Ask others who have had the procedure done and find out how they did.
  • Ask the tough questions. It's your body, it's your choice. Be honest with your surgeon about your prior medical history and what your goals are. Use all of the information available to make the right choices.
